Publisher's Preface
This volume is part of the official reference documentation for the PostgreSQL database management system.
PostgreSQL (pronounced “Postgres-Q-L”) is a powerful database system with a long history, going back over 20 years to the postgres project at the University of California at Berkeley. Today it provides a high level of conformance with the ANSI-SQL 92/99 standards and is fully ACID compliant.
In addition to its technical strengths, PostgreSQL offers a fundamental advantage over proprietary database software: the complete source code to PostgreSQL is available to everyone under a free software license, so users are not reliant on a single company to fix problems with it. Free software removes the single point of failure that exists when one company owns and controls a program.
To support the ongoing development of PostgreSQL, we will donate $1 to the PostgreSQL project for each copy of this book sold.
